My Top 10 Favorite C.S. Lewis Quotes

C.S. Lewis is one of the greatest Christian theologians and authors of the twentieth century. His studies, letters, research, and even fiction has created a legacy of inspiration for apologists and churchgoers alike. This was difficult, but I laid out, in no particular order, My Top 10 Favorite C.S. Lewis Quotes:

“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic – on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg – or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronising nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” – Mere Christianity

“Jesus Christ did not say, ‘Go into all the world and tell the world that it is quite right.’” – God In The Dock

“Since it is so likely that children will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage.” – On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature

“Joy is the serious business of heaven.” – Letters to Malcolm

“We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.” – The Abolition of Man

“There is but one good; that is God. Everything else is good when it looks to Him and bad when it turns from Him.” – The Great Divorce

“The sun looks down on nothing half so good as a household laughing together over a meal.” – The Weight of Glory

“Forgiveness does not mean excusing.” – Fern Seed and Elephants

“Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see.” – God In The Dock

“These then are the two points that I wanted to make. First, that human beings, all over the earth, have this curious idea that they ought to behave in a certain way, and cannot really get rid of it. Secondly, that they do not in fact behave in that way. They know the Law of Nature; they break it. These two facts are the foundation of all clear thinking about ourselves and the universe we live in.” –Mere Christianity
