Sam Raimi Confirmed To Direct Doctor Strange Sequel

Spider-Man‘ Trilogy director Sam Raimi has officially been announced as the director of Doctor Strange: Into The Multiverse Of Madness, which is set to see the return of actor Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme and doctor Stephen Strange.

According to CNet, the Oz the Great and Powerful director confirmed his involvement in the Marvel feature in a phone interview with journalists.

“I loved Doctor Strange as a kid,” he said. “He was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me. He was probably No. 5 for me for great comic book characters. He was so original.”

Raimi was stated to be a possible replacement after the first Doctor Strange movie director Scott Derrickson departed from the project following some “creative differences” with Marvel Entertainment’s parent company Disney.

“I’ve worked with Sam Raimi. One of the nicest people I’ve known in the film business, and as a director, a true living legend,” Derrickson said of Raimi in February. “What a great choice to take over Doctor Strange.”

Raimi also noted a scene in Spider-Man 2 where the Sorcerer Supreme is mentioned on camera in a sequence on what to call the film’s antagonist.

“When we had that moment in the Spider-Man movie, I had no idea we’d be making a Doctor Strange movie,” he said. “So it was really funny to me also, coincidentally that line was in the first Spider-Man movie … I wish I had the foresight to know I was going to be involved in the project.”

Raimi, of course, is known for his work on the Evil Dead franchise, the first Dark Man film, and of course, the trilogy starring Tobey Maguire as the web-slinging superhero Spider-Man. He will be working with MCU actor Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen will reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff from Avengers: Infinity War.
