‘Extraction’ Review- Hemsworth Brings The Boom. Literally.

Produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, the Netflix action film “Extraction” is directed by Sam Hargrave and co-produced by Chris Hemsworth who also stars in the movie.

Australian mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) is tasked by his organization to rescue jailed Indian drug lord Ovi Mahajan Sr.’s (Pankaj Tripathi) son Ovi, Jr. (Rudhraksh Jaiswal) from Bangladesh criminal Amir Asif (Priyanshu Painyuli). At first, Tyler succeeds in rescuing Ovi and the operation goes according to plan. He intends to hand the teen off to Saju (Randeep Hooda). However, they are betrayed when Tyler’s partner Nik Khan (Golshifteh Farahani) tells him Ovi is refusing to pay the fee. Conflicted, Tyler seeks refuge with his friend Gaspar (David Harbour) who betrays them. Tyler decides to go off on his own to save himself and Ovi from the many enemies surrounding them.

The Russo Brothers definitely brought their “A-game” to this film. While they did not direct it as they did Captain America: Winter Soldier, they produced and co-wrote it, basing it on Ciudad, a novel co-written by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, and Fernando León González.

Chris Hemsworth, Rudhraksh Jaiswal, and Golshifteh Farahani all pull out fantastic performances. The dialogue between Chris and Rudhraksh is incredibly well-written. Their banter is spot-on and it helps drive the plot forward. Likewise, Golshifteh is the breakout role. Her talent is on full display in this flick.

I also enjoyed the action. The stunts and the gunfight scenes are top-notch, accentuated with stellar cinematography from Newton Thomas Sigel and complimentary music from Henry Jackman and Alex Belcher. In that regard, it was technically and aesthetically done with excellence.

A few critics have suggested that the film was lacking in the story department. I disagree. While I will admit, I do wish there was some humor to provide moments of brevity there lacked a certain amount of depth, I found enjoyment in the simplicity of the story. That is a rarity in films today. Some go too far bogging down in worthless philosophy while others are so simple you can guess what happens next. The Russo Brothers did a good job of balancing those things.

Bottom line, the Russo Brothers have brought us an excellent film in Extraction. It is simple, yes, but has some excellent performances and has some high-quality filmmaking techniques.
