Star Trek Is Putting Anson Mount In The Captain’s Chair For New Spin-Off

It is finally happening! After receiving wide praise for his ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ role as Christopher Pike, commanding officer of the USS Enterprise, actor Anson Mount has been announced to reprise his role in the new series ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.’

Mount is not the only actor returning to the role. According to a CBS All Access press release, Rebecca Romijn is returning as Number One and Ethan Peck will once again play Science Officer Spock.

“This is a dream come true, literally,” said series writer Akiva Goldsman. “I have imagined myself on the bridge of the Enterprise since the early 1970s. I’m honored to be a part of this continuing journey along with Alex (Kurtzman), Henry (Alonso Myers) and the fine folks at CBS.”

“Speaking just for myself,” said Mount in an announcement video. “I have never received more love from a fanbase than I have with the Star Trek family.”

“It means so much for us to be able to announce this right now at a time when so much of the planet is hurting.” He continued, “We’re going to get to work on a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future.”

He concluded with a callback to Pike’s catchphrase, “I guess there’s only one more thing to say, ‘Hit it!'”

CBS All Access also announced a few other series including two animated shows and a “Section 31-based series with Michelle Yeoh”

Personally, I am glad to hear that the science fiction franchise is returning to “optimism.” While I did not have as bleak of a lookout of Star Trek Discovery or Picard, I do acknowledge the tone of the shows were so dark and pessimistic. However, when Anson Mount appeared as Captain Pike in Discovery’s second season, I saw a change in direction that appeared positive. Hopefully, we will get a return to form with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, seeing the crew of the Enterprise “boldly go” into new space adventures.
