‘The Stand at Paxton County’ Review- A B-Movie On Government Overreach

The Stand at Paxton County‘ is an indie thriller directed by Brett Hedlund. It is produced by ESX Productions and Forrest Films, based on a screenplay by David Michael O’Neill and Carl Morris. It was released widely by Netflix.

Surgeon and Army Captain Janna Connelly (Jacqueline Toboni) is called away from the frontlines of Afghanistan to her family North Dakota horse farm where her father Dell (Michael O’Neill) is being harassed by local Sheriff Roger Bostwick (Christopher McDonald) and Deputy Carl Haggen (Blake Sheldon) under the guise of an environmental impact law. With the help of veterinarian Dr. Victoria Morel (Marwa Bernstein) and ranchhand Matt Hudson (Tyler Jacob Moore), they decide to take a stand against the overregulation that is causing them to lose their family land.

I will say from the beginning that this movie has a B-movie quality to it. I cannot quite put my finger on it, but I feel like there was a lack of gravitas that pushed it to the next level of quality for a movie.

That being said, the acting is good, nothing mind-blowing, but each actress and actor do bring their best for this movie. Michael O’Neill as the struggling father and Christopher McDonald as the corrupt law enforcement officer are the two best in the movie, but I also want to compliment Jacqueline Toboni for her performance as the daughter trying to save her father.

The story is an enthralling and intriguing one that is a tale of government overreach and how special interests can affect even the landscape of the locals. As you watch Janna and her father deal with the corruption that goes to the highest forms of government, you can feel the stress that it causes them and their friends who they have worked with for some time. The movie is reportedly based on a true story and that does give it a sense of realism of the things that can happen to every day, ordinary people.

Bottom line, The Stand at Paxton County is a B-movie, but it is a good B-movie. The story is an excellent parable of government overreach and how corruption can hurt everyone. I really enjoyed it and found it a cut above for Netflix.
