Batman: Zero Year writer Zack Snyder and “Nightwing” Kyle Higgins takes aim at alternate take on one of the Caped Crusader’s most climatic tales in “Batman Knightfall: All Hail Saint Batman,” from the DC Comics’ Tales Of The Dark Multiverse series.
In an alternate reality, Jean Paul Valley defeats Bruce Wayne, winning over the mantle of Batman and the protector of Gotham City. Jumping forward into the future, Valley has turned Gotham into a theocracy isolated from the world and controlled by him and his zealots. He has killed many of Bruce’s allies and only keeps Bruce alive to force him to confess that Valley is the right choice to be Batman.
However, Lady Shiva and her son, whose father is Bane, sneak into the city with the intent of freeing and healing Bruce Wayne so he can reclaim the mantle of Batman. All of these events lead to a shocking end.
I will say, this is one of the most intriguing of the “Tales Of The Dark Multiverse” story-arcs. While I disagree that Valley would have become this zealot, I do like the spin of taking a tragic story of redemption and twisting it into a story about a jealous usurper. I will say, I was not totally on-board with the ending, but it was satisfactory. With art by Javier Fernandez, you just can’t go wrong.
I also want to give shoutouts to Lee Weeks and Brad Anderson for the cover. It is one of the most impressive covers I have seen in a long time and it definitely matched the story perfectly.
