Ranking Frank Peretti’s Novels

Frank Peretti has written a plethora of fantastic novels. I have read them all. He is a master when it comes to the written word and one of the best of the modern Christian writers. His explorations of the supernatural, faith, crime, and his passion are ever clear in every single one of his novels. This is how I would rank them. I’m including his main novels, so his kids fiction The Cooper Kids adventure series and his short stories in The Harbingers series are not included in this list.

Starting from my least favorite to my absolute favorite.

Monsters – Exploring things like ethics in science, it follows a woman lost in the woods and being held captive by strange primate-like creatures. Her husband is trying to find her and slowly comes to realize there is a conspiracy going on in a nearby laboratory.

House – Co-written with Ted Dekker, this book is about two couples locked in a house that is seemingly alive… and sinister. They are pursued by a Barsidious Black who tells them they will live, if they kill one of their own.

Nightmare Academy – The second and final book in The Veritas Project Y/A series, the Springfield family, a family of government investigators, go undercover at a bizarre children’s academy where the teachers and staff are performing strange psychological experiments on the kids.

Hangman’s Curse – Undercover agents Elijah and Elisha Springfield and their parents go into a high school where an urban legend about an alleged curse of the school’s ghost that is killing people.

Piercing The Darkness – A sequel to Peretti’s premier novel (more on that later), Sally Beth Roe runs away to Bacon’s Corner where someone wants her dead. Little does she know that demonic forces are chasing her, but angels are protecting her.

The Oath – The town of Hyde River is hiding a dark secret. There is a creature hiding there and one man goes there to find out about the mysterious death of his brother who was last seen in the town.

Tilly – His very first novella, originally written as a play. It explores a woman who has dreams where she encounters strange children who seem to want something from her.

Illusion – After the loss of his wife, aging illusionist Dane Collins is grieving. However, he is forced out of his stupor when he encounters Mandy, a nineteen-year old girl who wants to be his understudy. She strangely resembles his wife in the most unusual ways.

Prophet – Local anchorman John Barrett is angry after his father is seen protesting at a political event spouting bizarre prophetic things. His father is later found dead and the son he lost contact is back in town. Oddly, he begins to see things in a spiritual light more than he did before.

The Visitation – Travis Jordan is burned out pastor who is just trying to move on after the death of wife. However, the town of Antioch is visited by a false Messiah who threatens the fabric of the town.

This Present Darkness – His novel that started a landslide in Christian fiction. A small town is involved in a strange conspiracy from the occult who seek a takeover. A pastor at the edge of his wits and a persistent reporter are trying to find. Little do they know that angels and demons are warring in the supernatural for a common goal.

  2. I think House was my favorite! I love Ted Dekker’s books, too. I haven’t read all of these so I’m adding the rest to my summer reading list. Thanks for sharing this!

  3. Love Frank Peretti!! I haven’t read all of his books, but agree with Piercing the Darkness at the top of my list of favorites. Tilly is my second favorite. Two amazing books that do so much more than entertain … they cleverly intertwined spiritual truths with everyday realities.
